The temple houses a small well called the ‘Jnana Vapi’ (pronounced as Gyaan Vapi) which was built to be a chamber to hide the precious Jyotirlinga when the temple was invaded. Legend has it that a priest of the temple jumped down the well along with the Jyotirlinga to protect it from the attackers.
